Hey everyone! It's that time of the year where the annual mod/indie popularity contest from ModDB/IndieDB invites everyone to vote on their favorite mods.

You have about 6 days to vote at the Top 100 Mods and Top 100 Indies of 2014.

While I'm usually not a fan of this kind of popularity contest, specially at ModDB (where the editors usually ignore real time strategy projects possibly because FPS usually offers more polygons per model), I'm positively surprised with the outcome of this contest so far. PPM has several mods at the Top 100 and Generals: Zero Hour is the second game with the highest amount of votes.

So, we would be honored if you could take 25 seconds of your day to support our hosted mods by clicking in the image below and voting on each of them:

Released Mods

- The Dawn of the Tiberium Age (C&C: Tiberian Sun)
- Twisted Insurrection (C&C: Tiberian Sun)
- Tiberium Essence (C&C: Tiberium Wars)

Upcoming Mods

- Tiberian Odyssey (C&C: Tiberian Sun)

Thumbs up also for the mods hosted on Revora, such as Mental Omega APYR (C&C: Yuri's Revenge), Contra (C&C: Generals: Zero Hour) and Rise of the Mandalorians (Star Wars: Empire at War).

Regarding the Top 100 Indie, it's a pitty that OpenRA did not qualify to the top 100. Anyway, as a RTS fan, I'm cheering for 0.a.d which is an Age of Empires competitor with a great potential.

I'm fairly sure this isn't true.  And if we tally up the number of games in the top 100, 25% of them are RTS or Grand Strategy.  40% of the mods in the top 100 are for those 25%.  So whether or not the editors ignore them there is clearly a following.  And these stats haven't changed much in the past few years.

I've also seen the ModDB staff highlighting quite a few RTS projects on their front page and mod spotlights this year, including both DTA and TI.

Yep. We've had all of our major releases highlighted and om the front page, but certain mods always seem to reach the top even if they've not been updated for 3 years which is unfair, but hey.

TI

49 of 222730

DTA

140 of 22730

They look both excellent to me. Cool Especially when you consider the huge total amount of mod projects.

The "popularity" doesn't really mean much though; it's refreshed daily, not displaying the overall popularity of the mod over a longer time window. Basically, most of the time DTA has a rank between 80-200, but whenever we make a news post, our rank jumps to below 30 (depending on the activity of other mods, anywhere between 2 and 30) for a few days. I'd rather use the amount of ratings or the amount of watchers as a popularity metric, although they're also not accurate (update check statistics tell me that both DTA and TI have more players than one would assume from their watcher counts).

And yeah, there's some gigantic mods with 2000 or more watchers, those mods will always reach at least Top 100 without any updates.

I was talking about the editors, not the crowd (player's choice).

When you check the Editor's Choice for best mods, you'll understand what I'm talking about. For quick reference:

- http://www.moddb.com/events/2002-mod-of-the-year-awards/features/mods-of-2002 (Editor's choice, no RTS mods selected)
- http://www.moddb.com/events/2003-mod-of-the-year-awards/features/mods-of-2003/3#readarticle (Editor's choice, one RTS mod: Blitzkrieg 2: The Finest Hour)
- http://www.moddb.com/events/2004-mod-of-the-year-awards/features/mods-of-2004 (3 RTS mods out of so many, but this one was people's choice only)
- http://www.moddb.com/events/2005-mod-of-the-year-awards/features/mods-of-2005/2#readarticle (From the Editor's Choice there is no RTS)
- http://www.moddb.com/events/2006-mod-of-the-year-awards/features/mods-of-2006-players-choice/3#readarticle (Editor's Choice covered the Strategy genre, which is why one mod was chosen and another one got a honorable mention.)
- http://www.moddb.com/events/2007-mod-of-the-year-awards/features/editors-choice-winners-showcase (Editor's choice, 2 RTS mods)
- http://www.moddb.com/events/2008-mod-of-the-year-awards/features/editors-choice-best-upcoming-indie (1 RTS indie game only from Editor's Choice, 0.a.d.)
- http://www.moddb.com/events/2009-mod-of-the-year-awards/winners (From the Editor's Choice, there is no RTS projects)
- http://www.moddb.com/events/2010-indie-of-the-year-awards (From the Editor's Choice, there is no RTS projects)
- http://www.moddb.com/events/2010-mod-of-the-year-awards/winners (From the Editor's Choice, there is only one RTS nomination for single player: C&C3: The Forgotten)
- http://www.moddb.com/events/2011-indie-of-the-year-awards/features/ioty-2011-editors-choice (From the Editor's Choice, there is no RTS projects)
- http://www.moddb.com/events/2011-mod-of-the-year-awards/features/moty-2011-editors-choice (From the Editor's Choice, there is no RTS projects)
- http://www.moddb.com/events/2012-indie-of-the-year-awards/features/ioty-editors-choice-2012 (From the Editor's Choice, there is one project that might be considered a sort of RTS, but it is about building towns)
- http://www.moddb.com/events/2012-mod-of-the-year-awards/features/moty-editors-choice-2012 (From Editor's Choice, Hyrule: Total War was chosen... and it was the first time they've awarded a RTS mod for its art)
- http://www.moddb.com/events/2013-indie-of-the-year-awards/features/indie-of-the-year-2013-editor-choice (From the Editor's Choice, there is no RTS projects)
- http://www.moddb.com/events/2013-mod-of-the-year-awards/features/mod-of-the-year-2013-editor-choice (From Editor's Choice, The Great War has won creativity and 2nd best mod)

If you verify each of the links above for FPS projects that were awarded by the Editors and pay attention that only one RTS mod was awarded for its visuals in 11 years of events, you'll notice that I do certainly have a point.

I keep my words. This time they've chosen 2 RTS mods (*sarcasm* WOW!!! *sarcasm*) and.... guess what? 8 first person shooters, of course.  However, I trully did not expect they'd look at Tiberian Sun mods. I guess it's always good to put some pressure on them #Tongue j/k.

Also, if you pay attention at the attributes they've awarded on each mod, you'll notice that they still award the quality of shooters. Lambda Wars was an exception. Regarding TI, they didn't look at the mod itself. They've recognized its community support.

Anyway, congrats, Aro and the whole TI team! I'm very surprised and happy for Twisted Insurrection taking the community award there Very Happy. Considering the effort you've guys placed in this mod, I'm glad that it is getting part of the recognition it deserves.

There are a lot more mod for shooters though, I'm not convinced that an 2:8 ratio of RTS to non-RTS is that bad.

Don't be fooled by the ratio:

FPS: Best single player, best multiplayer, best upcoming, best interaction, top 3 mods

RTS: Best overhaul

Arcade: Best visuals

Creativity and Community awards does not require reviewers to play the mod or give it attention.

Finally, when you see the player's choice, you'll notice that the ratio of FPS vs the rest is not as high as it is with the editors.

TL;DR: The editors are biased towards a genre since day 1, 'nuff said.

Regardless, congratz, TI.

I can confirm that a handful of the ModDB editors have actually played through and reviewed TI at least though, there was a recent mod-cast which we were featured in, and they had some kind words to say (but also got some things wrong, ouch). But for the most part, I agree with you that FPS the dominant genre, we no longer live in the World where Sonic the Hedgehog is the best thing ever, but instead join the line of waiting for Half-Life 3 and learning CS:GO.
Back in the early days, FPS only had DOOM, Quake and a few other titles storming the World, but these days there are tons of FPS games that have made an impact, what modern RTS games have made an impact recently aside from perhaps Starcraft 2? I genuinely don't know.

Well it is true that FPS is MUCH MUCH more popular than any else kind of genre due to it immersion and action. It is no wonder why alot of people play like Call of Duty, Renegade, BF, BL and other than RTS. (But if it was combination of RTS and FPS, it would be a different story, lol)

Congrats TI and DTA.
