So I've played Universe at War: Earth Assault lately and was inspired by it's Research system to create a new branching system in the mod.

Each faction has three branches that augment their army in numerous ways. WIP E.g

Chimera branches

Mutagen - unlocks chemical weapons and improves infantry

Corruption - unlocks psychic and chaos weapons

Technical - unlocks magnetic weapons and focuses on direct firepower

Each of these branches will give the commander new weapons, improvements on various fields (price cuts, buffs, etc), heros/heroines and a support weapon. They are not without weaknesses though, as each branch sacrifices some attributes. WIP E.g

Mutagen branch reduces firepower considerably, mainly against structures and vehicles.

Corruption branch has little focus on firepower in favour of mind-control and chaos weapons. Also weak against units immune to psionics.

Technical branch ditches some of the fancy psychic ability and area denial chemical weapons for more conventional and practical weapons.

There are four tiers in each branch and each higher tier is unlocked by buying one of the three branches. Tier 1 is available right from the start (i.e Con Yard). Note that you are not locked into a branch. You can either focus on a single branch, become a balanced army (e.g tier 1 & 2 are Mutagen, tier 3 & 4 are Technical) or become a frankenstein of an army where you a jack of all stats, master of none. Also note though that you are limited to only one branch per tier, so choice wisely.

This branch system should allow players to play their faction in a myriad of different ways. Thus, you can be sure that you will be fighting a different kind of army from the same faction every now and then.

So what is your input on this idea? And at what tier should the branch(es)unlock the hero/heroine?

Bringing back the Research Junction Idea in a way? Razz

I'm all up for it seems like a snazzy way to make Chimera more surprising to fight with.

that sounds so cool on paper, if this works, i'd love to re-install YR, this is promising some great mechanics and builds.
